The quarterstaff was known by the English masters of defence to be the best of all weapons when it came to close quarters combat, between 7-9ft long it took skill to handle and practice to defend against. We use rattan staffs as training weapons to ensure a heavier blow and a solid thrust will not injure provided the correct gear is worn (some lender gear is available but a full set of equipment is inexpensive, and not required to begin training), a traditional method used by the Victorians later on in history to practice the quarterstaff.
